Inaugural lecture Geertje Mak
On 6 July Geertje Mak, professor of the Political History of Gender at the University of Amsterdam will hold her inaugural speech “Huishouden in Nederlands Nieuw Guinea. Geschiedenis van geslacht op geslacht” on behalf of the Wilhelmina Drucker Foundation.
Geertje Mak will demonstrate that a political history of gender offers a lens on history, through which the importance of gender and sexuality for the understanding of historical change becomes visible. This is shown very clearly in an example from the era of Dutch colonization of New Guinea, of a late nineteenth-century missionary family raising Papua children who were bought 'free'.
