The Dutch Waterloo
Van Zanten in the media
18 June 2015 marks the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo, the final battle of the Napoleonic wars that followed the French Revolution. The Battle has been widely commemorated, in elaborate reconstructions of the battle, museum exhibitions and international conferences, just to give a few examples.
Jeroen van Zanten ( Assistant Professor of Modern History, ASCH) and colleagues Ben Schoenmaker (UL) and Jurriën de Jong (CBS) have also contributed to the commemorations and in doing so have attracted quite some media attention. In an interview on 25 May with Radio EenVandaag, Van Zanten explains that Waterloo remains a sensitive topic in France, whose defeat for some is still difficult to come to terms with.
In Nieuwsshow on 6 June, Van Zanten describes the events of the Battle of Waterloo. He talks about the role of the Dutch Prince of Orange and claims that the English have played down the Dutch and German contribution to the Battle over the past 200 years.
