EU@Amsterdam - ACCESS EUROPE
Book publication and public events
In the first half of 2016 the Netherlands will hold the Presidency of the European Union for the 12th time. All EU meetings in the Netherlands will take place at Amsterdam’s historical naval dockyard, the Marine Etablissement. Because of this occasion, the Amsterdam University Press has published 'EU@Amsterdam – Een stedelijke raad'. This volume, edited by ARTES staff member Anne van Wageningen and Virginie Mamadouh, Associate Professor Political and Cultural Geography at the University of Amsterdam, contains fifty essays by UvA and VU University staff, and professionals and practitioners. It is the point of departure for five public events that are co-organised with Pakhuis De Zwijger in 2016.
Both the book and the events aim to inspire reflections on the significance and future role of European Cities. The essays prove how ‘thinking through cities’ can help us finding solutions for urgent issues that today’s societies are facing.
During every of the five EU@Amsterdam public events at Pakhuis De Zwijger three speakers are going to look deeper into certain aspects of these issues, and will challenge the audience to take part in these discussions. How should we interpret and/or promote freedom, quality of life, health, diversity, knowledge, and innovation within Dutch cities? All sessions will be in Dutch.
