Research

Yvonne Vermijn (1985)  finished a bachelor's degree in French Language and Culture at the University of Utrecht in 2008 (cum laude), focusing on the reception of medieval literature. In 2010 she finished the Research Master Medieval Studies at the same university further specializing in late medieval French historiography and the 'late' chansons de geste tradition. Research on the prose versions of the Chanson de Bertrand du Guesclin resulted in the cum laude thesis entitled ' Chacun son Guesclin: la réception des quatre versions de l'oeuvre de Cuvelier, 1380-1480 '. This Masterthesis has been awarded the Rencesvals Scriptieprijs 2011.

In September 2011 Yvonne started working on a PhD thesis at the University of Amsterdam on the reception of the Chanson de Bertrand du Guesclin from the time it was first written (between 1380 and 1385) up until 1618. Central to this research is the study of the manuscript tradition of the Chanson and the two prose versions that were made of it  quickly after the first publication and the contextualisation of the Chanson within the 'cult' of Bertrand du Guesclin among the high nobility of France in that period. By these means I will reveal the individuals behind the different expressions of interest in Du Guesclin, as well as their motifs (both political, social and artistic) for making him a hero.
