The Visual Culture Colloquium (VCC) is a lively platform for the study and debate of early modern art in a global perspective. In a series of monthly lectures held each academic year, we present the latest research, trends and themes in art historical scholarship of the early modern period. Our speakers are drawn from both local and international communities of scholars.

Our gatherings connect both junior and senior scholars, and bridge the academic and museum worlds. The recurrent informal discussion & drinks reception following each presentation provide an opportunity for students, PhDs and professionals active in the field of early modern art history to connect during our gatherings.

Early modern visual and material culture is a dynamic field that is moving in exciting new directions, dealing with historical artworks in light of present-day concerns, which include textile trade, word/image relations, decolonial issues, practices of women makers, gender and embodied experiences, art and science, or philosophy and theory.

This research group starts from the idea that artworks—or the objects of visual culture generally such as ephemera, artists’ tools, jewels, furniture or ceramics—are important documents through which the early modern period can be understood. The history of collections and museums are also a recurring topic of our reflections.

We are open to all students and scholars with an interest in early modern art history. Please join us at the Visual Culture Colloquium’s monthly lectures & drinks reception.
