Petra Brouwer is Assistant Professor of Architectural History at the Department of Art History at the University of Amsterdam, specializing in the history, theory and historiography of modern architecture and town planning. Her specific fields of interest are: 19th-century production and circulation of architectural knowledge; processes of canonization; Dutch town planning in the postwar period (suburbs, new towns, compact city); architecture in relation to national and local identity; architecture of the everyday.
Petra studied art history and physical planning at the University of Amsterdam, from where she graduated for both studies cum laude. Her thesis on the Dutch new towns Lelystad and Almere was published with NAI Uitgevers in 1997 and won several awards. In 2009 she received her PhD at the Free University of Amsterdam. She published her dissertation De wetten van de bouwkunst. Nederlandse architectuurboeken in de negentiende eeuw [The Laws of Architecture. Dutch Architectural Handbooks in the Nineteenth Century] with NAi Publishers (2011) which was shortlisted for the Karel van Mander-Prize 2016.
Brouwer is a frequent guest lecturer and participant in debates at architectural, cultural and educational institutions. She is a member of the advisory board of the Amsterdam School of Historical Studies at the University of Amsterdam and program director, with Tim Verlaan, of the MA-track Stads- en architectuurgeschiedenis.
For her research she received grants from the Getty Research Institute, the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Studies (NIAS), the NIAS-LorentzCentre, the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), and the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO).
She is an Advisor of the Municipal Committee for Spatial Quality and Monuments Amsterdam. From 2017-2021 she served as editor-in-chief of Architectural Histories, journal of the European Architectural History Network (EAHN). She was a member of several juries (including Amsterdam Architecture Prize, Abe Bonnema Architecture Prize, Amsterdam Zuiderkerk Prize) and advisory committees (amongst others Amsterdam Centre for Architecture, The Netherlands Architecture Fund, Amsterdam Town Planning Advisory Council), a member of the editorial board of Stadsgeschiedenis, and architectural critic for De Witte Raaf.
