From 1976 till 1984 Piet Gerbrandy (1958) studied Greek and Latin Classics and Comparative Indo-European Linguistics at Leyden University. For more than twenty years he taught Classics at secondary schools, co-authoring a couple of textbooks for the final exam in Greek language and literature. He published a dozen of collections of poetry and a couple of collections of essays on Classics and Dutch poetry. He translates Greek and Latin literature into Dutch, reviews contemporary poetry, and is member of the editing board of De Gids, perhaps Europe’s oldest literary journal still in print.
Since 2006, he teaches Classical and Medieval Latin at the University of Amsterdam.
His research focusses on Latin poetry from Late Antiquity.
