    Opleiding en functie

    Jan Willem van Henten studeerde geschiedenis en theologie in Leiden, met specialisaties in oude geschiedenis, Jodendom in de Tweede Tempel periode en Nieuwe Testament. Hij promoveerde in 1986 aan de Rijksuniversiteit Leiden op het proefschrift "De Joodse martelaren als grondleggers van een nieuwe orde: een studie uitgaande van 2 en 4 Makkabeeën". Voor zijn hoogleraarschap aan de UvA was hij universitair docent Jodendom en Nieuwe Testament aan de UvA, de UL en de UU. Per 1 augustus 1993 is hij hoogleraar Uitlegging van het Nieuwe Testament, vroeg-christelijke letterkunde en Hellenistisch-Joodse literatuur. Vanaf 1 augustus 2008 is hij tevens directeur van de Graduate School for Humanities en vice-decaan van de Faculteit Geesteswetenschappen.

    Education and position

    Jan Willem van Henten studied History and Theology  at Leiden University, specializing in Ancient History, Judaism in the Second Temple Period and New Testament. His PhD (Leiden 1986) concerns martyrdom and the construction of Jewish identity in 2 and 4 Maccabees. He taught Judaism and New Testament at the Universities of Amsterdam, Leiden and Utrecht and is full professor of New Testament, Early Jewish and Early Christian Literature at the University of Amsterdam since 1993. He is currently also director of the Graduate School for Humanities and vice-dean of the Faculty of Humanities.

    Onderwijs en onderzoek

    Zijn onderwijs betreft de inleiding tot en de uitleg van de Bijbel, de geschiedenis, godsdienst en literatuur van het jodendom en het Nieuwe Testament met de ontstaansgeschiedenis van het christendom. Hij draagt bij aan het MA-programma van Religiestudies (de MA Biblical Studies en een module over religie, geweld en conflictbeheersing. het MA-programma Jewish Studies. Zijn onderzoeksprojekten betreffen de joodse literatuur uit de oudheid, met name een commentaar op Joodse oudheden 15-17 van de joodse geschiedschrijver Flavius Josephus (voor het Brill Josephus project), martelaarschap bij Joden en christenen en de receptie van de Bijbel in de hedendaagse cultuur.

    Teaching and research

    His courses concern the introduction to and interpretation of the Bible, the history, religion and literature of Judaism as well as the New Testament and Christian origins. He contributes to the MA-programme in Religious Studies (including the English taught programme in Biblical Studies and a course on religion andviolence). His research projects concern Jewish literature fromantiquity, especially a commentary on  Jewish Antiquities 15-17 by the Jewish historian Flavius Josephus (in preparation for the Brill Josephus project), martyrdom among Jews and Christians, as well as the reception of the Bible in contemporary culture.
